Kotagiri is a serene town in the Nilgiris Hills, 33 km away from Mettupalayam , in Tamil Nadu , India . Kotagiri however has many firsts to its name. It has the distinction of being the first area in the Nilgiris to be discovered and settled by the English Government, and was the first choice for several Madras Government servants to use as a summer retreat before it sank into anonymity, and before the other two towns of Ooty and Coonoor took over in terms of popularity.
About 28 km from Ooty, towards the east, is the 26-sq-km Kotagiri, incredibly picturesque, amongst the first townships of the British and a great place to visit. From Kotagiri one can even proceed to the Kodanad View, Catherine Falls or Rangaswamy Peak, all famous for their natural beauty. Kotagiri Roads are finest. One hour drive from Mettupalayam railway station. Two and half hours drive from Coimbatore airport.
The Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road (about 34 km long) which was 8 ft wide to begin with, was widened to 17 ft in 1872-75 with a gradient of one in 17 by the Dist. Engineer, Major Morant R.E. and handed over to the District Board in 1881. During the period from 1819 to 1830, John Sullivan's contribution was, apart from laying the route to Ooty, that he built the first house called Stone House in this place.

Due to the receipt of adequate rainfall both during South West and North East monsoons and congenial agro-climatic conditions, foreign exchange earning crops like Tea and Coffee are grown in large scale.
The main crops cultivated in the tract are Tea, Coffee and Fruits like Pear, Mandarin Orange and Hill vegetables like Potato, Cabbage, Carrot, Beans and Minor vegetables like Beetroot, Turnips and Knol khol.
